NEW MAMMOTOME PRONE BIOPSY SERVICE

The Sydney Breast Clinic is in the process of installing a new mammotome prone biopsy service. This new service will be up and running by the end of the year.

Vacuum assisted stereotactic biopsy with prone table provides an opportunity to access lesions not otherwise accessible.  These lesions are invariably seen only on the mammogram images, and usually in only one projection.

The prone table makes it possible for the patient to have the biopsy performed in a comfortable environment.  The mammotome allows for extraction of adequate tissue and allows deployment of a clip to precisely locate the area of biopsy.

Also, lesions are often only seen mammographically. Microcalcifications cannot be seen on ultrasound and comprise a large proportion of the biopsy sampling performed.

"This new service is the only one available in the private sector. It will be an important alternative to the long waiting times often encountered for this service in the public sector." said Managing Director Ron Phillips

"This service will further strengthen our position as offering speedy access to a one stop clinic giving improved peace of mind to patients." he said.
