Referrals

Sydney Breast Clinic welcomes referrals from General Practitioners and Specialists. A patient can attend without a referral, but will not receive a Medicare rebate towards the cost of the visit.

Information for Doctors

At Sydney Breast Clinic we aim to make our comprehensive multidisciplinary service as affordable as possible for your patient.

Most importantly, to help your patient receive the maximum appropriate rebate from Medicare please include a clinical note on your referral which tells us the reason for their visit.

Medicare rebates for breast imaging apply only to symptomatic patients or to patients with specific breast cancer risk factors (significant family history or personal past history of breast cancer).

Therefore, on your referral please request “Breast Examination, Mammogram with Tomography ± Ultrasound ± Biopsy if indicated”.

Referral validity

A GP referral is valid for 12 months, and a specialist referral is valid for 3 months.

Under Medicare, referrals for multiple imaging tests are valid for only 7 days after the first imaging test is carried out. If your patient requires further imaging after 7 days, a new referral will be requested.
