At Sydney Breast Clinic, we use the SOZO® bioimpedance device to detect lymphoedema early, supporting proactive monitoring and personalised care throughout and beyond breast cancer treatment.

We have recently welcomed a SOZO® bioimpedance spectroscopy device into Sydney Breast Clinic. This non-invasive technology allows us to measure body composition and detect early signs of lymphoedema – often before visible symptoms appear. This is critical to enabling timely intervention and better outcomes. It is important to be aware of lymphoedema as a potential side effect of breast cancer treatment.

What is SOZO?

SOZO is a quick, safe and painless test that measures your fluid levels and body composition. It plays an important role in detecting early signs of lymphoedema, but also gives you information about muscle mass, fat mass, dry lean mass and body water.

We will give you a copy of your results to take home following your appointment.

Why is it important?

People who have lymph node surgery may be at risk of developing lymphoedema – a build-up of fluid that causes swelling, often in the arms.

SOZO helps us:

  • Identify fluid changes before symptoms appear
  • Start treatment early (if needed)
  • Track your progress over time

Although not life threatening, lymphoedema is a chronic condition that can impair function and quality of life. Symptoms can be significantly mitigated if detected and managed early.

We recommend baseline measurement with SOZO as soon as possible after diagnosis. Ongoing monitoring is available during treatment, after treatment completion and well into the future of your breast care to support long-term surveillance and management.

What to expect during the test?

  • It only takes 1-2 minutes
  • You will stand on the SOZO device ad hold two handles
  • It is completely non-invasive – no needles or pain
  • You can stay fully clothed (just remove shoes, socks and metal jewellery)

Is SOZO safe?

Yes. SOZO uses bioimpedance spectroscopy, a low-level electrical signal that is completely safe and painless. You won’t feel a thing.

Note: SOZO is not suitable if you have a pacemaker or certain implanted medical devices – please let us know if this may apply to you.

At Sydney Breast Clinic, we are committed to helping you feel confident and supported throughout your journey. SOZO helps us take proactive steps to protect your health.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask a member of your care team.
